For subaxial spine injuries, urgent decompression is recommended if there is a concomitant SCI. In some cases, the decompression can be performed closed, delaying the need for surgical intervention. Under the AOSpine subaxial classification system, all type B and type C injuries require surgical intervention, whereas more severe and unstable type A injuries also require surgery. 42 Patients who have coexisting stiffening bone disease with a cervical fracture should undergo additional advanced imaging to find occult fractures and MRI to rule out epidural hematomas. Most commonly, these patients have an unstable fracture and require surgery.
