Spectra from grain interiors, which include a large parent grain and several smaller new grains,exhibit relatively sharp Mn L2,3 edges, and spectra from the grain boundaries exhibit significant broadening and a * 1 eV shift of the Mn–L2,3 edge. The broadening and shift to higher energy loss of the Mn L3 peak in the grain boundary regions indicate the oxidation state of the interfaces is a mix of the bulk oxidation state and a higher oxidized Mn state [28].
