Incidental/imposed precise-elaboration/questioned subjects recalled more than subjects in either of the nonquestioned conditions, smaller f(72) = 5.38. Recall levels in the incidental/base and incidental/ imposed precise-elaboration conditions did not differ significantly, £(72) = 1.75. In short, the pattern of effects mirrored Experiment 1 exactly for the three conditions corresponding to those in the first study. In addition, having subjects answer the How questions about the precisely elaborated sentences produced better recall than precise elaborations alone, although performance in the incidental/imposed precise-elaboration/ questioned condition was inferior to performance in the incidental/base/questioned condition. As in Experiment 1, supplementary study and posttest measures were revealing about processing in these conditions and will be taken up after Experiment 3 is reported
