The main event of the novel happened in the summer of 1922. Nick Callaway, a Yale graduate and World War I veteran, came to New York from the Midwest to make a living selling bonds. He rented a cottage in West Egg village on Long Island, next to Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a young, mysterious millionaire who often holds luxurious banquets, but rarely appears in public. There are many people to eat and drink with him, and he is always a lonely person. Nick drives to East egg village to visit his cousin Daisy Fay Buchanan, whose husband Tom Buchanan is Nick's college classmate. They introduced Nick to miss Jordan Baker, a charming but slightly selfish young golfer; Nick thought he was in love with her. She told nick that Tom had an affair. His name was Myrtle Wilson and he lived in "ash Valley": an industrial dump between West Egg village and New York City. Soon, Nick, Tom and myrtle went to their apartment for a wild carnival. Myrtle mentions Daisy's name several times, and Tom flattens Myrtle's nose in anger.<br>
