Knowing about yourself means not only finding out what you are good at and what you like, italso means discovering what you are not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see youraim in life.Although most students would be unhappy if they found that they had failed an advancedmaths course, they have actually learned a great deal about themselves. They know that they cannotbecome engineers or physical scientists, and that they cannot be good at accounting work. So failurecan help a student to lead a much happier life if he or she draws the right conclusion from thefailure. They may then decide on their aim and choose the kind of work they would like to do.It is impossible to decide whether or not you like something until you have tried it. If youdecide you would like to play the violin, you need to take more than one lesson before you canknow whether you have any interest or ability. It is not enough to want to be a great violinist. You also have to like the hard and long trainingbefore you become one. If you just enjoy being a great violinist but hate the work, forget it.It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are still young, and then you willcome to a wise decision.
