With these new mathematical techniques scientists have been able to construct accurate models of a wide variety of irregular natural shapes and in so doing have discovered the pervasive ap pearance of fractals. Of all those, the fractal patterns of clouds, which originally inspired Mandelbrot to search for a new mathe matical language, are perhaps the most stunning. Their self-simi larity stretches over seven orders of magnitude, which means that the border of a cloud magnified ten million times still shows the same familiar shape.
