The salar border presents little to no gradient (1.6% on average in this study), with a very poor substrate, soil of incipient development with A-C type profiles, of medium to medium-fine textures at ground surface, moderately saline or alkaline, with a saline crust and a shallow groundwater horizon (Nadir & Chafatinos, 1990).In this environment, different plant communities develop such as scrubland, halophytic grasses and shrubs, depending on the type of vegetation growth (grass or cespitose thickets as cushion plants and shrubs respectively).
