He writes,The claim that one can imagine what it would be like for [a breakdown in these relationships] to become in one's own case the rule rather than the exception is,I think , equivalent to the claim that we could establish [his emphasis] that this had occurred in one's own case.’He then urges that one could not establish this; for while one knows what it would be like for it to seem that this had occurred generally, one could not establish it as true, since this would depend on memory, and one would have insufficient reason to believe one's memory.
